A Retrospective Single-center Study of Presentation and Prognosis of Guillain-Barré Syndrome in Pediatric Patients

Background: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a post-infectious immune-mediated peripheral neuropathy, progressing bilaterally and often symmetrically affecting sensory motor function. Most cases completely recover, but around 20% of may lead to complications, incomplete recovery, or even death. Objectives: This study aims assess the prognosis GBS in pediatric patients possible associated conditions regarding recovery prognosis. Methods: We investigated 71 admitted Mofid Pediatric Hospital from March 2014 2017. Demographic, clinical, laboratory data were retrospectively recorded analyzed. Two follow-up visits performed after 1 3 5 8 years onset, according Disability Scale, function was assessed during patients’ clinic. Results: found 35 male 36 female subjects with an average age 6.17 ± 3.82 (range 0.9 up 15 old); mostly presented myalgia weakness (78.9%) followed by headache, (7%). Around 84.5% had upper respiratory infection as their antecedent infection. Fifteen autonomic dysfunction observed, cranial nerve involvement. acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) form on electrophysiologic tests. Clinical recovery started in 23 children with Guillain-Barré syndrome after a mean time of 19 days and to full recovery in 15 was 6.2 months. Long term follow up indicated that 19 with acute onset had completely recovered clinically and three with subacute onset had a chronic relapsing or protracted course.
